Identifying Rivers and Catchment Areas

Before identifying the tanks, we should identify the rivers and catchment areas which bring water to these tanks. Two Major Rivers 1.Pennaiyar River •The Pennaiyar River originates in the Chennakesava Hills, traversing Karnataka and Tamilnadu for about 400 km prior to reaching Puducherry region. Pennaiyar is also known as Thenpennai or Ponnaiyar River. From the south with Malattar and Guduvaiyar (Kuduvaiyar) spill channels. 2.Gingee River •The Sankarabarani River originates on the western slope of Gingee Hill in Villipuram District of the State of Tamilnadu. It has two sources, one in the Pakkammalai hills and one in the mountains of Melmalayanur. They join near Thenpalai village to form the main river.
